Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning how to identify, knowing the value and counting coins is an important part of living in our society. How can we expect students to be financially responsible when they grow up, if they do not understand the value and importance of money from an early age?

My students are in kindergarten and first grade.

They have disabilities including but not limited to Autism, Specific Learning Disabilities, Developmental Delays and Speech and Language Impairments. Our school is located in a rough area of South Los Angeles were the majority of students come from very low income households.

My Project

My students need a variety of modalities to learn concepts. In class, they have direct lessons on counting, knowing the value of and identifying coins. In order to have a variety of modalities they need math manipulatives and workbooks. Since my students work at different levels, I like to work in small groups. We need bins to organize money manipulatives and center work. By organizing them into bins according to their level, I can be assured that my students are learning to count and identify money according to their level. I would like the money related and other math manipulatives and games so that my students can learn to skip count, identify coins and group different amount of items so that they can later count a variety of coins. The folders that I am requesting will be used to make math journals. The worksheets that I am going to make for the journals will include, counting, identifying coins and writing numbers in a variety of skip counting manners.

Children need a variety of modalities to learn concepts.

These supplies will help me add a variety of ways to learn about money and counting, an important concept that we need children to own if we want them to lead a financially responsible life. Thank you for taking the time to read this proposal. If you decide to donate you will be helping my students be financially literate and build a solid foundation on the importance of being financially responsible. Thank you
