Ms. Stewart from Washington DC is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 200 binders to develop organizational skills and keep track of complex reading material to start the school year and be successful 7th graders.

High expectations. Incredible challenges. Poverty stricken. Determined and ready. Think back to middle school: enormous pressure and super awkward existence. Couple these with the bleak realities of a struggling community and you have a clear picture of my students' real lives.
My students are seventh graders in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Washington, DC.
Most of them show up to school each day without pencil or paper. Many of them don't own a backpack and have empty lockers. They misplace assignments and often lose track of readings. Each and every 7th grader can and will achieve but lacking critical supplies naturally limits their success. Providing my students with folders and notebooks will allow them to keep their classwork organized, which will save hours of time that was once spent looking for misplaced assignments.
I can't stress enough how important it is for each of my students to have access to a binder in the classroom each day. Unfortunately, requesting that students bring this supply to class on their own will largely be unmet, even if it is tied to their grade. The binder will be used to hold homework, classwork, independent reading logs, personal copies of grade-level texts and reference sheets. Binders will also include a section on weekly vocabulary and grammar skills. Reserving class time to keep these materials updated will also serve as an important lesson in organization for my students - one that can be taken onward to high school.
Providing my students with binders will not only remove a financial burden from families with the greatest need, but it will also allow them to maintain organization and keep track of essential classroom materials.
