Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are bright, energetic, and ready to learn! Our school is a Title I school where 68% of the students are on free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
Over half of our 850 students are English language learners who are in the Dual Language Program.
In this program, students spend 50% of their time at school learning in English, and 50% of their time at school learning in Spanish.
Last year our school received the distinction of being a No Excuses University School, and we take pride in encouraging our students to plan and work toward continuing their education after high school!
This year we received the No Place for Hate distinction, as our students and teacher work hard on keeping a safe, nurturing, learning environment.
Many of my students were affected by Hurricane Harvey. They were displaced from their homes and live with relatives or in temporary living facilities.
We have an amazing school filled with amazing students. And I am glad to be apart of such a great school and district.
My Project
We encourage students to select the books of their choice by following some simple guidelines we call The Just Right Book. The students need to choose books that they can understand, read fluently, and be interested in. But many students struggle to select books, in great part because of the lack of an organized library.
The organization makes it easier for students to pick books they will enjoy.
These bins will be labeled by Genre, Topics, and Authors, making it as easier as possible for students to bookshop efficiently. The labels will contain, both, text and pictures so every student, no matter their reading level can have the same access to the books they love.
The bench will provide extra storage for books while offering a cozy spot to sit and enjoy reading time. This will be the home for students' recommended books.
The plastic book bags will be used by students to hold on to the books they will be reading every day. I have two classes, and each one of my students will have their own book bag.
