I teach at a school with 100% free lunch. Many students only receive food while in school. Children come from homes that at times do not have basic needs such as electricity and water. Older children have responsibilities such as watching younger siblings and taking care of the home while parents work.
Building community and future leaders are important qualities at our school.
Students have so many factors that hinder learning, issues such as abuse, drug use, neglect, poor living conditions, lack of food, and lack of clothing. Most students live in single parent homes, and the absence of one parent creates much stress that is sometimes hard to bear. Even with all these issues, students do want to learn.
My Project
Walk into many classrooms today and you will see desks, chairs, some mixed matched book shelves, and most are old and in need of some repair. I have been working on improving the furniture in my classroom. Being organized and clean is two very important qualities I instill in myself and my students.
An organized teacher helps run a classroom quickly, efficiently, and consistently.
Personalized student mailboxes help keep graded papers to return to students. A mobile bookshelf organizes books and makes it easier for students to pick that just right book. Reading benches offer books and comfortable seating for students reading independently.
Organizing supplies helps free time up for the teacher. This allows more individual instruction and less stress and time.
