Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school district is shifting towards a more student-centered, and student driven learning environment. My classroom consists of 21 first graders who come in every single morning excited about learning, and can’t wait to see what is in store for them that day. Of my 21 students, I have 7 English Language Learners in my classroom as well as 4 students who receive Special Education services.
Our classroom is a community where students respect each other, and the materials and resources in the classroom.
Many of my students mention that they do not have enough supplies and resources to continue their learning at home, so I want to ensure that I am giving my students the best, and most enriching experiences at school every single day. My students are so proud of their work, are extremely helpful to each other, and give 100% effort every single day.
My Project
Our literacy and math centers have shifted toward a more Student- Centered approach. In order for a Student- Centered classroom to run smoothly, materials and resources need to be neat and organized. Currently, my students have materials all over their tables, and it is hard for them to keep their materials in one, easily accessible spot. By having seat sacks at each and every seat for my students, they will have their own personal spot to keep all of their materials, and not have to take extra time to search for their materials when it is time to get to work. They can simply focus on keeping their seat sack neat and organized, and begin their work right away.
Headphones are something that are used in my class daily.
My students use a computer phonics program on Chromebooks for at least 20 minutes every day. Some students brought in headphones at the beginning of the year, but many of their headphones have broken and stopped working. Many students cannot afford to purchase another set of headphones for school. Unfortunately, I only have 5 pairs of headphones that I am able to let my students borrow, and that is not nearly enough for my whole class. In addition to the lack of quantity that I have, the 5 headphones that I have are ripped, and are on the verge of breaking as well.
I am hoping for students to store a pair of headphones that I assigned to them in their seat sacks. This way, students can get right to work, and not have to compete for the 5 headphones that I have supplied for students to use. Students will also be held accountable for taking care of their headphones and keeping them safe in the seat sacks.
