Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Middle School special education teacher, teaching 7th grade math and science. I teach in an underserved community, in a Title I school with limited resources.
My special education students have a variety of struggles that they must overcome every day, inside and outside of school.
It is difficult for many of my students to stay on task and engaged day to day. I do my best to address their individual needs in order for them to be successful. And in order to do this, I would like to ensure a clean and engaging learning environment!
My Project
Students in my class vary in their abilities. One of the common challenges for students with disabilities, especially in middle school, is maintaining organization. My students need assistance keeping their school materials organized. Labels are not enough for my students, who struggle with reading on many different levels. They respond best to color!
Having color-coded pocket folders, color-coded worksheets, and paper trays will help!
With different colored folders, students will be able to designate one color for each subject, and keep their loose papers in order. Having different colored paper trays around the classroom for different activities and handouts will help students develop routines and organization skills in the classroom.
