Middle school is the age where students start to focus on the way they fit into the world. In my class, I try to foster students self-confidence and self-affect through differentiated instruction. My math and science students are hardworking, respectful and highly inquisitive. They always seem to amaze me with their thirst for knowledge and critical thinking skills. They may not actually use all the content standards in their future careers, but it doesn't stop them from trying their best to be successful. What they need is the right tools to maximize their time in class so that they don't have to worry about doing homework where there may not be a lot of support. Being a Title I school, we have many students whose parents work multiple jobs and don't always have time to help their students. This is why I try to maximize class time to get in as much learning as possible because homework isn't helpful when there isn't someone to help.
My Project
Teaching Math & Science require a few different classroom materials/setups. In order for students to be able to prioritize their learning, I need the tools to help them focus on the things that actually matter while they are in school.
My sharpener is broken so students are constantly bumming others for pencils or sharpeners.
This wastes the time they have with me in class. If I can provide pencils and a sharpener we can spend more time learning and less time being worried about not having the right stuff for class. I want to maximize learning time by minimizing transition times. The calculator pocket holder allows for quick retrieval and storage. Bins for placing books for different groups and different subjects will allow for faster retrieval and storage. Even after practicing it still takes over 5 minutes just to file in and get their needed supplies for the day, then about 5 minutes cleaning up. We need all the time that we can get and spend less time trying to simply get organized.
