Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

When I set up our classroom library in August, I was lucky enough to find a goldmine of cardboard display boxes at Target. These wonderful cardboard display boxes have served well to organize our fourth grade classroom library by genre, topic, and author, but our library is well used and the cardboard is just not holding up. The edges sag and the corners have been reinforced and re-reinforced with storage tape. We need sturdy plastic storage bins to organize our library not only for this year's students but all the fourth graders yet to come. The storage bins are sized appropriately for both our chapter books and our beautiful picture books, preventing the bending of covers and the stress on bindings which is the result of too many books being squeezed into too few cardboard display boxes. We also need an easy label-maker so that we can put clear labels on our books to make sure they get back to the bin where they belong so that the next student can find and enjoy them. Labeling the genre of each book will also reinforced the students' understanding of genres. The 19 students in this fourth grade classroom will experience great joy at a new set of bins to organize the library and their learning of genres will be reinforced by the clear labels we will be able to put on the books using the label-maker. An organized library will allow the students to more easily find books that they are interested in reading. In addition to these 19, fourth graders in years to come will experience the ease of locating good books and using a library system through these organizational bins and the labels on the books made by the label maker.
