Help our future leaders! I teach 9th - 12th grade Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps in a public high school where 36% of my students are on free or reduced lunch. The purpose of JROTC is "to instill in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment." We do many activities outside of the classroom to keep them active, involved, and to fulfill this purpose.

We travel as often as we can to field meet competitions against other schools. We often travel long distances and the students have to pack their uniforms and accessories for the trip. Too often they arrive and don't have all the gear they need, or it has gotten lost along the way because they don't have an adequate bag or container to pack their gear in. The degree of their poverty is often shown when they carry their gear in plastic grocery bags.

I have used tool boxes very effectively in other schools to organize the students gear. The boxes are easy to inspect before packing them for the trip and stack very nicely on the bus or on a trailer.

Providing the cadets with a secure and uniform means of packing for trips enhances their ability to get organized and will improve their ability to finish at the top of the competition.
