My students love to express themselves through song. Singing gives them a chance to forget about the struggles they are dealing with on a daily basis. Making music also lets them express the feelings they might have a hard time otherwise putting into words.
Less than one year after opening our new school building, it was devastated with more than six inches of water due to hurricane Harvey.
Many of my students lost their homes, all their belongings and have been living in hotels, RV's or with family members. When they get to sing together, I can see the stress of living with such hardships fade from my students' faces, even if only for an hour a day.
My Project
Hurricane Harvey ruined all of our shelves and storage items. Having a well organized classroom helps things run smoothly. Bookshelves and tables will help to keep student supplies organized and easily accessible. It also makes for greater student involvement and engagement.
Having materials in the proper spot helps to keep the classroom running smoothly, so organization is the key.
The choir uses materials from many different sources and those resources need to stay organized in order for students to find what they need quickly. Without these organizational materials, students would spend the majority of class looking for the items they need. If they are all in the correct places, students will have more class time to actually learn.
