This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are so excited to come to school and learn everyday. The passion they have for school is incredible to see, especially since many of them come from low socio-economic environments and are English Language Learners.
My goal is for my classroom to be a safe, engaging environment.
Our school is a small neighborhood school- many of our students walk to school rather than being bused in. We have just under 450 students in Pre-K through 5th grade. Many of these students have often been in the same class with their peers since Pre-K or kindergarten.
My Project
Our Title 1 school is over 50 years old. Unfortunately, so are many of the pieces of furniture we have in the classroom. Bookshelves and desks have been passed down over the years from teacher to teacher and to say they are falling apart is being generous. These new shelving units and materials will make organization fun.
I want my students to be PROUD of their learning environment.
Most of the students I teach are from struggling home environments. I want to make their classroom a safe, exciting place. I'm hoping shiny, new, and fun materials will encourage participation and spike interest. If the students are excited and proud to come to school, that attitude will translate to their work.
The weekly calendars will be used to display the learning goals for each day. The shelving units, folders, and file holders will help each group of students which I like to call a "learning community" organize their area of the room. The folders will be used for problems of the day from the first day of school to expose the students to 5th grade content in preparation for state testing. The dry erase markers will be used for engagement in small groups for both reading and math, as well as unit reviews and test prep. The lights and batteries are for a classroom voice volume level display. Finally, the binder rings and Command hooks are for revamping the Word Wall.
