Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hungry to learn! They love hands-on activities that explore their creativity. They are second graders who are ready for anything.
I teach in a very low-income area in California.
Many of the students come from families where one or both of their parents are farm workers. Many of their parents are not educated but want the best for their children. They are very supportive of the teacher! The area also contains a lot of kids in situations where there are a lot of mental health issues. The kids come with a lot of baggage, but the students are great and impressionable. Most have never left the neighborhood, so they are very excited to learn about other places and things. I love this group of kids! They need positive influences in their lives, and I am very excited to be one of those contributors. These kids are smart and need to be shown how to be successful and make learning fun!
My Project
We need magazine boxes to store our classroom folders. This will allow our folders to remain in one piece and not disappear into the jungle inside our desks. We also need storage bins to help organize our books by reading level, so we can find books that we can read more easily. Color coding is super important in second grade.
Organization is super important!
Besides organization, we need magnets to go along with our science unit. Every student would love to have their own set so they can experience push and pull first hand, rather than having to share two sets of magnets with 30 students.
