My Students
Strong-willed, determined, good sense of humor, social; these are just some adjectives to describe my students in my classroom. They really have compassion for each other. Some of my students have been in the same class with each other for years so they have a great sense of community and trust. We continue to build the climate in our classroom each day, focusing on trying to become more independent learners and to take charge of our learning.
They all live in a low income community in Oakland, CA.
Most are African American, but many are recent immigrants from Central America and the Middle East. Our school is a Title I school, and all our students are on free lunch. Our school is a public STEM school. We have engineering, gardening, and all the classroom teachers teach regular science and use technology in the classroom.
My Project
We need storage sacks; the use of these storage sacks will make a real difference in my classroom. We are piloting a personalized blending model where students are learning where they are at independently. With this model, we have new movable furniture that allows the students to work by themselves, in a partnership or a small group.
This new type of learning environment, although spacious and conducive, has no room for students to house their materials/books.
The donations for this project will improve my classroom by reducing the amount of clutter on my students' desks which will allow them to focus on their classwork therefore building their academics.
