I will be teaching 75 amazing fifth graders science and social studies this year. I got the privledge to know many of them last year. They are a high energy group that truly love to learn. They are very hard working, responsible kids. I have had three that have already stopped by our classroom to see if they can help me set up. Many come from very low economic/ broken homes so they truly appreciate and love being at school.
My Project
This is the first year the students will experience “platooning” which means they will rotate classes For each subject. Since developing a routine is so important at this age, they will learn to come in to the class and take their storage bin from the cart. Each bin will have all their supplies for the day. They will have a folder for work to be turned in, a journal for science, and a folder of work for that day as well as any hands on materials I plan to use. At the end of class they will file all their paperwork and return their storage bin to the cart. This will develop a routine which is a key component of organization and classroom management. They will be able to decorate their storage bin to show pride and ownership of their social studies and science work. This will also allow all papers/books to be readily available and not missing in their locker or lost at home. Each day I will be able to check all of their materials to make sure they are organized and that assignments have been completed. This way, not a minute of learning time will be missed. I value every second that I have to develop my students into lifelong learners!
