Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are from a mid-sized, urban city close to San Francisco. About 44% or our students qualify for free and reduced price lunches due to their current economic situation. This year we have over 2100 students, and 400 are English Language Learners. About 27% of the parents of our students have a college degree. Some of the students who graduate from our school are the first in the family to have a high school diploma, and many more are the first to attend college. The ethnic breakdown is approximately 50% Hispanic, 29% Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% White, and 7% African American.
Our students get along remarkably well considering their diversity.
At one point, it was determined that our students had over 60 home languages. The school is almost 60 years old, and it has been very poorly maintained over the years. Our students often suffer from the climate that has been created by this aging facility.
My Project
We need to make sure that all items for classroom use are easily accessed by students so they can be in a focused environment. Currently items they need are in boxes because there is no storage in this new space for materials to be placed.
Being able to organize our art materials allows students to be more independent and creates a less interrupted classroom experience.
Having a clear space that students can access easily to get materials they need will put less stress on the classes as a whole. Being able to see what is available to them will help to not interrupt the creative workflow.
