As a teacher, at a Title I school, with students that come from low incomes and high poverty, we don't always have the resources that we need, but we still prove to be successful with our daily work. My class of 5th graders comes from all over the world, has different backgrounds from their outside communities, families, and lifestyle, and are on different learning levels (below, on, and above).
Teaching at a Title I school that also integrates the arts, advanced academic programs, and STEM means our daily schedule is full!
Beyond the standard Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts, my students attend different specials and receive ESOL and Special education services, plus many additional activities and services throughout the school year. My class is large and the school is large, but the learning and teaching is larger, which makes my job worth it!
My Project
When 5th graders arrive at the beginning of the year, they are excited and anxious knowing that it's their last year in elementary school, but are nervous and curious about middle school. In order to prepare my students fully for middle school, organization is key throughout the their 5th grade year.
By using binders and dividers while in 5th grade, it will be one less thing for my students to grasp when they transition to middle school.
I will model at the beginning of the school year and continuously throughout the school year how to properly set-up the binders and how to maintain using them in an organized way. My students will master placing their notes in the correct sections, writing on the correct side of the paper and easily locating items they need with the use of the binder and dividers. All of my students will benefit from having the binders and dividers no matter their academic level.
