Our students come from very low economic backgrounds with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in our area. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Chuukese, Marshallese, Filipino, Mandarin, and Spanish. As diverse as our students are culturally, they are diverse in their academics.
My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day.
Many of my students receive food bags every other week, which is donated by a local church in our neighborhood. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
Our school serves students in grades K-8 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and a safe learning environment. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school and college, and we emphasize the importance of attending college through AVID.
My Project
Our school is implementing AVID and these supplies will encourage our students to be more organized. In an effort to do so, we want to start by having all important paperwork in one place, and the mailbox will help do the job. We would also like to decrease "lost" papers due to items being misplaced when passed out in class. We want our students to organize their work in a binder and to highlight important information using a color coding strategy (colored highlighters). We feel that when our students are organized, we are one step closer to achieving greatness, which in turn will help them reach their goals.
