Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school participates in the "Walk to Learn" approach and students do not stay in the same classroom all day. When my language arts students are in my classroom, they do not have access to desk storage. They struggle with keeping their books and work spaces organized.
My fifth grade language arts class is comprised of 99% second language learners.
They are hard workers, but continue to struggle with proper English grammar. We are part of a k-6 grade school with a student population of just under 800 in a low-socioeconomic neighborhood in central California.
My Project
When the students are in the classroom, they do not have a desk to keep their books and materials organized. The desks are used by my "homeroom" class and the language arts students cannot keep their materials inside the desks. We have been keeping our textbooks (which we have 3 of, plus a workbook) on bookshelves around the room. The students enter the room, collect their books, and place them on the corner of their desks. This limits the amount of space they have for writing, and students who are easily distracted find it very difficult to "work around" their books. When we place them on the floor, they get tripped over due to our small space. We will use the book bins to keep our books organized and protected so they don't have to be on our desktops. The students are very excited about this idea and are looking forward to having clear desk space.
This donation will help students to be more organized and provide them with more space to work on classroom assignments.
The book bins will have the students' names on them so they will be able to locate their supplies quickly and easily.
