My students need binders! I teach SpEd and am tired of seeing my students struggle with organizational skills. I need to teach organizational skills for life.
Do you remember the last time you misplaced something? That moment of panic as you searched the house for car keys, phone, an important receipt? Imagine feeling that way every day. That is the feeling my students know and what I am going to change. Binders = organization = peace of mind!
I teach high school science and history in a special education setting.
Organizational skills come easy to many of us, but for my students it is a daily struggle to keep track of things. I intend to address this need by teaching "Organizing for Life" this year with the use of binders and binder checks for each unit. This will teach responsibility and give a sense of confidence to each of my students. Although my organization system is geared for the classroom, the skills learned will transfer to all aspects of life. My seniors will graduate with the necessary skills to keep track of bills, checking accounts, important papers, and more. If my students are not given the opportunity to learn these things now - when will they learn? And if they don't learn - who will be there to pick up the pieces?
My Project
I am asking for plain white binders with a view cover. I intend on allowing students to personalize and decorate a cover page to identify the binder as theirs. By using plain white binders with view covers - I will be able to reuse these binders with the next year students. High school students love to personalize their world. It helps to engage them in an activity. I have also planned on grading the binder checks with the same weight as the chapter test. Rest assured I will be teaching organizational skills along with this so that my students will have every opportunity to be successful with this important skill for life.
The saying is "it takes a community to raise a child." I believe this - I believe that as a member of my students community I have a responsibility to teach not only academic content but to prepare my students for all life has to offer.
I want my students to be successful when they graduate, and teaching organizational skills is one of the most important things I can do for them.
