An idea blossoms. In May 2018, two seventh grade students, Kelcey and Sophia, planted the seed to begin a garden club. With much enthusiasm and support from two teachers, the garden club was established in August 2018. These two students spread the word and were easily able to recruit five more students; Avary, Samarah, Courtney, Serena, and Sydney. The passion for taking care of the planet and healthy living has helped this amazing group of students steer their goals for the club. Their ultimate goal is to be able to offer fresh vegetables to all students and teachers in the cafeteria.
Together we can help each other. The Garden Club members have set goals to create and maintain organic hydroponic gardens with the intention of feeding school-grown organic vegetables to the community of students. With the enthusiasm, determination and teamwork we are on a path of success. The members will learn skills such as scheduling, collaboration, design planning, fundraising, to name a few. All of these skills will help them in any career they may choose in the future.
In Their Own Words
With our greenhouse gardening idea, we hope to achieve a healthier lifestyle for our school. The greenhouse fosters this mindset by providing healthy, good-tasting food that will be obtainable in the 'student-grown' section in our cafeteria. Our goal is to share our passion for gardening with other students and teachers at Dartmouth Middle School.
In setting up and presenting our plan, we have attained some excellent leadership skills that can we can apply to our everyday lives. These skills can be transferred to projects in our current classrooms, as well as future experiences that we may choose in the future during high school or beyond.
With this funding, we will be able to begin composting and gardening in our greenhouse then start a healthier atmosphere in our school. The use of the greenhouse and the crops it produces acts as a stress reliever and a source of nutritious food to be shared and used school-wide.
