I am a K-5 general music teacher at Vinson-Bynum Elementary School in Wilson, NC. I teach 6 classes a day and see all 700 children in a week's time. Most of the instruments we use are very old and have been around for a long time. I have my Orff Certification and a few older xylophones and metallophones for the students to use. I would like to increase the number of Orff Instruments to improve the music program and give more students a chance to play them. The instruments would help the students in reading rhythms and melodies, composing, creating, improvising, and keeping the beat. They would also boost self-esteem, integrate curriculum from other content areas, and help to follow the NC Standard Course Study for Music. The instruments I will need are the various sizes of xylophones and metallophones in the Orff collection. These instruments are: alto xylophone, alto metallophone, bass xylophone, bass metallophone, bass bars, contra bass bars, and 25-Note Resonator Bells. Each instrument has keys that can be removed and replaced as needed to assist with practicing, performing, arranging, and creating while having each instrument playing an individual part at the same time as the other instruments. The Orff Instruments are a valuable part of creating a well-rounded music curriculum. Our school has very limited exposure to musical instruments and I would like for the students to benefit from them.
