Hooray! This project is fully funded

My goal in this project is to give Clyde Erwin students more opportunities to learn music using the Orff method. The Orff method is based on the work of Carl Orff. It uses simple percussion instruments, voices, recorders and movement. I already possess most of the Orff family of instruments. The addition of the temple blocks and drums will add enrichment to our instrument family. Temple blocks are a large part of the Orff program, allowing a student to play complicated two-handed rhythms and are used in almost every Orffesration (music using Orff instruments). We have had an increase in our student population that necessitates the extra hand drums, castanets, shakers and tambourines as the Orff method requires that all students have an instrument to play. The method books will be used to add color and variety to our music classes. I will be able to teach using many different styles and ideas. This project will address several needs in my music class. First, and most importantly, children need to experience music through movement and singing. The method books will give my students a chance to learn American folk songs as well sa music from other countries. This music carries high educational value because of its history, but also because of the instrumental and movement activities attached to the lessons. It is a method that allows students to have a visual, aural, and kinesthetic connection to the music. It also allows students to explore creativity without fear of "messing up". It invites each student to become an active part of a musical ensemble. The instruments will help provide more opportunities for students to become active musicians. By putting an instrument in every child's hands, each one becomes an instant part of the whole, without waiting in line. My students will have an instant creative experience. Clyde Erwin Elmentary school serves students fromall races and socio-economic areas. Seventy-five percent of our students live at or below the poverty level. Twenty-two percent are considered exceptional children, needing special services for learning disabilities. Seventy-one percent of students are minority. Clyde Erwin also serves a few students who speak little or no English. Clyde Erwin has six grade levels ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. As the music teacher, I teach each and every student. I want my students to have these materials because I feel this addition to our music program will enrich their lives. They will become better, more independant students throught the proposed music experiences.
