Ms. Rosenberg from Newark NJ is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a classroom that's equipped with organizational supplies, visual aides, and reading materials.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school, a beautiful, historic building built in 1910, is one of the oldest in Newark. Our classroom, however, is not equipped with many materials that will set my students up for success. We need more organizational items and reading supplies so my students can compete at a national level.
My students are inquisitive, creative children who are just beginning to understand Social Studies content.
They attend a previously-failing school who has just received a School Improvement Grant, which allows them to attend an extended school-day. They have barely had a Social Studies education before, so they do not yet understand many basics of geography, history, civics, or politics. In order to change their lives, they need to succeed in school. We lack many of the supplies that can make that happen. In my mission to inspire my children to appreciate the life-skills and important lessons that a social studies education provides, I need better-grade materials for my room. Once the room is organized and labeled clearly, my students will be in an atmosphere that will enhance their education.
Many of the materials in this project are organizational. As sixth graders, my students need to start owning their learning. Our ultimate goal as a school is to enable our students to become self-regulated learners, who hold themselves and their teachers accountable for how they spend the day. In order to encourage my students to take ownership of their learning in my room, they need to understand where materials are kept so they can be constantly engaged, even if they are finished with their work and need something else to do. The literacy components on this list (the literacy cards and historical biographies) will help my children stay engaged with social studies even if they are done with their work, which will in turn allow me to help children who require one-on-one help during independent work time. Finally, the partitions will allow my students to take their tests and assessments alone; many of my students' eyes wander when they are frustrated - these partitions will fix that.
These materials will help my classroom become a great learning environment.
These donations will organize my room and set my classroom (and more importantly, my students) up for success. My students are wonderful children who thrive on routines. The more materials we have to set up learning centers so my students know exactly what to do and when, the more successful my children will be.
