Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Arthur O'Shaughnessy wrote, "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams." Help the future musicians, symphony players, music educators in our classroom discover, hear and see the beautiful world of music they excitedly come to school for everyday.
My students, instruments and their classroom survived a hurricane, warped and moldy bridges and bow bugs of destruction with smiles on their faces and eagerness to get back to playing!
Our thriving Texas school district may still be recovering but the students are motivated and excited to perform everywhere they possibly can. I have an incredible group of students. Many of my players have behavior and personal issues and only come to school each day because they know they have orchestra to come to. They know it is a safe place where they can be their very best selves! My students are hard working, funny, and just love to play. I teach at three different schools trying to build our program and I have the best students a teacher could ever have!
My Project
"The conductor of an orchestra doesn't make a sound. He depends, for his power, on his ability to make other people powerful." -Benjamin Zander We survived a hurricane, moldy bridges, bow bugs, and warped instruments! We are slowly recovering from the hurricane and replacing much needed items. We are a growing orchestra program and do not have our own music room but our amazing principal gave us one of the science rooms to call our own! We do the best we can with what we have but students in the back of the class often have to stand up because they cannot see me conducting from the front of the room. I currently stand or sit on a table to conduct. By having a podium for our classroom the students will be able to see every beat, rhythm and cue from rehearsal to concert! This would further prepare the future musicians for concerts, competitions and their musical life!
The violinists and violists often stand up in the back of the orchestra in order to see me conduct!
Having a podium in our classroom will allow the students to get used to seeing every cue, rhythm and dynamic. It will allow them to get used to the podium for concerts and competitions that they perform at throughout the year. Often when we attend a festival or competition the students are amazed at how well they can see my cues and conducting and will often voice they wish we had a podium at school. We have tried several make shift podiums but I tend to step off of them or they collapse. A real podium would be a great educational gift for the whole class!
