Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school in the Houston area that reaches about 700 students' lives. We have bilingual and ESL classes. We provide free breakfast for 100% of our students. Each morning teachers have breakfast with their students in the classroom. It is imperative to teach the whole child. The students come to school ready to learn and for some this is the most enriching and interactive environment they have had the opportunity to experience.
I am fortunate enough to run the Oral Language Lab at my school.
My classroom focuses on developing vocabulary, oral language, social skills, reading, writing, and expression through rich children's literature, adult authored dramatizations, music, centers, and play.
My Project
I will be creating a Home Depot dramatic play in my oral and written language lab, in combination with The Three Little Pigs dramatic play and story basket. The Three Little Pigs combined with the construction theme will allot my students a real world scenario experience along with strong children's literature to promote oral language development in my classroom. We will be acting out the story, learning about blueprints, construction, and measuring in the dramatic play centers. These supplies will help my ESL students gain this real life experience, as well as develop new language they would otherwise be lacking.
