As a special education teacher, I work with students who need academic support. At my school, I am able to have a large percentage of students in the classrooms, unless a student requires accommodations for testing. I feel honored that students feel comfortable enough to want to come to me and share a part of their day. I would like to offer additional tools for students when they are at school to continue their support needs.
In high school, new and exciting resources are welcomed for all students in the school to use!
There are times when students need additional resources to grasp the concepts or the task(s) being taught. Thank you for your time and interest in my students. I am working to be proactive with my students, school, and community to offer more hands-on ways to learn. Our students live in a small, very rural area with very little cultural diversity. The school is the town.
My Project
I decided that we needed a change in seating. Part of that change was to brighten things up within the classroom and give students the opportunity to choose from a variety of seating options.
By giving students the opportunity to choose where they sit and what they sit in, you are giving them the opportunity to choose how they learn, thus empowering them to take charge of their own educational needs.
I have requested three rolling chairs that allow students to be active while working. They will also allow students to move freely about the room to work in collaborative groups. Flexible seating within a classroom can allow students to practice skills needed within all communities. My vision is for students to choose "smart" seats daily so that they can work collaboratively and engage in problem-solving skills with their peers all while being comfortable.
Academic instructional differentiation is a commonly used technique to meet diverse mental/emotional needs of students, and it's time we start applying that same theory to the meet the physical learning needs of students in all classes.
