Optimizing Student Learning Through a Sensory Path and Environmental Print
Help me give my students the materials needed to create a sensory path in the hallway outside of our classroom and to help fill our classroom with environmental print!
I have the honor of working with a diverse group of kindergarten, first, and second grade students who are energetic and inquisitive learners. Each one of my students enters the classroom with a smile on his or her face and are excited to learn, despite any learning difficulties they may have.
Most of my students not only have academic goals in reading and math, but they also have fine motor, gross motor, and self-regulation goals, which can be developed and improved upon through the use of a sensory path.
For some of my students we are working on ways to increase their energy levels, and for others we are working on calming their bodies down and getting their bodies ready to learn. A sensory path would be an incredible tool for my students, but it would also benefit the entire school as well. My plan is to place the sensory path in the hallway outside of my classroom so any student who needs a mid-morning, post-lunch, or movement break throughout the day can utilize it.
My Project
A lot of my students are just beginning to learn their letters and sounds, and having vinyl to create labels for name tags, book bins, math and literacy centers, and to be able to create a Word Wall for students to reference in an innovate way to have a classroom full of environmental print.
Furthermore, I would use the vinyl and transfer tape to be able to create a sensory path.
A sensory path is a colorful, creative, and playful way for students to build nerve connections to the brain, which in turn improves cognitive growth and helps to develop motor skills to carry out day-to-day tasks. It is also a great way to calm an anxious child or to help regulate a child. A typical sensory path consists of several exercises like hopping, stepping, and jumping, specifically designed to develop motor skills like balance, hand-eye coordination, and spatial awareness. The sensory paths can also be used as a great "brain break" throughout the school day, helping students to sit still and focus for longer periods of time in the classroom.
