This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
We are a 6-12 school where high school students choose to attend our school. We are preparing young, mostly African-American students to attend the college of their choice. For the second year in a row, our school has had the largest percentage of graduating seniors.
Most of the students that go on to college are the first in their families to do so. We are a high-needs school as well as a Title 1 school. Our test scores, although not where they should be, continue to improve each year.
We offer all honors classes in the high school. As such, we need to offer books with a different point of view. My students need current titles showing opposing viewpoints.
Each year all our 9-12th grade students take the PSAT or the SAT. Students must maintain a 2.0 or they will be returned to their neighborhood school. We offer tutoring and Saturday classes to enable students to do their best. AP courses are offered in English and US History. Our students are really trying hard to succeed.
