Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in a unique place where we serve two very different populations with very different needs. We offer a community program and a dual Spanish/English immersion program. Fifty-four percent of children attending our school qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch. Because this number is below 60%, our school no longer receives Title I funding, though there is still great need for support around equity and enrichment for our at-risk and high needs students, as well as the student body as a whole. While some of our students get to experience enrichment activities outside of school we have large population that does not. After having numerous of these students ask for help finding teams for them to join I have decided to start a team on my own as I am familiar with their families' needs.
Enrichment opportunities increase self-confidence, persistence and resilience, all skills than can be strengthened within the targeted population.
Being the physical education teacher allows me to build this program with an emphasis on building community and upholding high expectations for the athletes throughout their day. I will place specific expectations centered around behavior and class participation.
My Project
By funding this basketball team we will be able to do 3 things. First, we will be able to provide students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds an opportunity to participate on a team at no cost to them. We will be able to do this since all of the coaches will be volunteering their time and the students will be fundraising throughout the year to cover other expenses. With the purchase of a timing system and uniforms we will be able to keep this opportunity going for years to come.
Second, I have placed a strong emphasis on raising expectations for ourselves and each other.
While many of the students on the team struggle with academics and behavior in the classroom, studies have shown that positive enrichment activities can positively impact students academic experience. By building a community with a like minded commitment to being our best selves, the students can bring these learned skills into the classroom and support each other.
Third, some of these students are athletically gifted but have not been provided an opportunity to develop these skills nor learn what it is to work hard. Through practices I will teach kids how to push themselves physically and mentally.
