Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are used to being let down, yet always show a great reverence for life. I want my students to feel confident and excited about art, rather than discouraged. “If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced". Van Gogh
My students are a group of kids who are used to being told no.
They are a highly creative group, but are not always given the means, or time to use what makes them whole. They enjoy taking risks both behaviorally and creatively. If they are not engaged in the project/lesson that they are working on, they like to test their limits. They are easily distracted, but want to learn. I try to keep them guessing as to what it is that we will be doing next, to keep them on their toes. They thrive off challenge, and are easily bored with your cookie cutter art lessons. If I can provide them with materials that make them feel like artists, they might finally start seeing themselves as the artists that I know they are. My school is highly effective in creating a positive tone and culture for our students to achieve academic success. We are a title one school that struggles to provide quality materials that will give our students the opportunity to excel due to lack of funding.
My Project
I was given the opportunity to offer a true painting elective course this year. This means that students were given the choice of what extra classes they would like to take this year, and my painting class was one of them. I had many more students register for my painting class than I could have ever anticipated. Majority of these students are looking to pursue a degree/career in the arts. With these materials my students will have a better chance at being prepared for the programs they will soon be entering. Through this course, the students will be developing a well structured painting portfolio. They will not only be engaging in various painting units that will allow them to tailor the objectives so that they will represent who they are as artists, but will also be exposed to different painting techniques and materials. As of now, students are limited to watercolor and very small amounts of tempera and acrylic. They will use all of these materials to further their craft and skill.
This project will help my electives students understand that they moved beyond their initial studio course, and accomplished so much already as an artist and deserve to grow even more.
This course will allow them to stand out and gain a sense of self worth as artists. If this project gets funded I will feel confident as an art teacher in that it will allow me to give my students a proper painting class, as opposed to using whatever paint materials are left over from my level one studio course.
