These kindergarten students have had a bumpy start to the year. At the start of this year, they began with a sub expecting the scheduled teacher to come back after leave. This didn't happen so the children have just been told she is on extended leave, the sub wants to remain a sub, and that's where I come in! I have been hired to remain with them now and take them to the end of the school year.
The children have had this "temporary" feeling in the room for three months.
They have been waiting for their other teacher while bonding to the sub who is not staying. The transition to me will be huge, to say the least. They are energetic, bright, charismatic, and having to endure another dramatic change in their very young school career. I've been in several times and they are so eager to please and want to show me their best work!
The students are craving the bond that happens with their first teacher and need a schedule and a permanent comfortable and safe place to learn-that is my goal for these littles.
My Project
Right now we have tape where they sit and they fiddle with it, pull it up and stick it on themselves or on another person. This carpet will be a life-saver for giving the students a visual to help create their own body bubble. I cannot tell you how much this will help in the early stage of classroom management. We are starting over from day 1 and this carpet will be the beginning of establishing a routine for instruction and procedures.
The carpet will help the kids by giving them a visual seat to stay in while we have our "come together" times.
Having designated seating areas while at the carpet will reinforce where they should be and what they should be doing and strengthening our behaviors during this time.
