We are a charter school that has single gender classes. We focus on leadership and community service. The students are encouraged to challenge themselves in academics. I teach 7 & 8th grade (girls and boys) in science. We only receive state funds and don't benefit from local funds and yet, we are the only middle school in our county to achieve AYP (adequate yearly progress) every year. Our students are consistently scoring above average on standardized tests. Think what we achieve with adequate equipment!
My girls and boys are excited about science. They are our future. Would you want a doctor working on you that never worked on an organism? Fueling the excitement of the human body internally through dissection may produce wonderful future surgeons. By the way, did you know the internal portion of the eye of a shark bounces like a super ball? Cool..isn't it!!!!
We have had most of our furniture supplied through donations of businesses and parents. Science is an area that needs a lot of equipment. We have 4 students applying for every position open. We have a lottery to select students. We are growing and need equipment to do hands on science. This equipment will open the door for many more projects that just wouldn't be possible otherwise. These students love putting on equipment and getting their hands into science. Many come back telling me they have never forgot some of our labs.
You can spark the excitement in middle school students. Girls become interested in science careers because of their experiences in middle school. Boys become more focused with the possibility of using equipment to experiment. I have asked for lab aprons, goggles, and preserved sharks to dissect. A parent has purchased us dissecting kits and we have created our own wax pans to work with. You could impact our future with a small donation. Thank you for considering us.
