I teach a very diverse group of students who all experience great success in their science classes. My kids overcome great obstacles and circumstances on a daily basis, but still manage to engage, stay focused, think critically and thrive in Science class. Most express that Science class is their favorite part of the day and that puts a smile on my face and a sense of pride in my heart.
Our school motto is "Great By Choice" and my students choose to persevere through the daily challenges they face in efforts to better themselves personally and academically.
It is my great hope that I have inspired them to elude the limitations that poverty or society has placed upon them. For it is with knowledge, ethics, effort and determination that great men and women have evolved and those things are free to us all if we Choose to embody them.
My Project
Our state's standards are changing this year. Our new curriculum is task based. My students are going to need hands-on labs and experiments to demonstrate their mastery of a standard. We do not have tables for our classroom and our desks are slanted which do not permit the use of scientific tools and liquids safely. We need new tables and stools.
Diversity is valued and embraced at our school, but it does present some challenges.
We have a high number of students who struggle with vocabulary and we try to overcome this obstacle with the use of visual aids and simulated labs. Lab experiences allow them to problem solve and learn through discovery. Sitting at tables also facilitates peer tutoring and students can actually use the vocabulary in context. Thanks!
