A typical day in my classroom is filled with wild energy, creativity, and a great deal of student creation. It's not the cleanest of rooms, but you can't say that we don't experiment! Our workspaces show it; students need to supplement their creativity with calculators for computation.
Our students are dedicated, thoughtful, and outspoken with their educational needs.
Because students drive the creative process at our school and teachers work hand-in-hand to design intensive projects with our students, each year brings new challenges and exciting opportunities. Every year is completely different from a design perspective, and each class of students brings their own gifts and needs to the table as we build our educational experiences from the ground up.
As a small community school, a necessary component to our creative design process involves thinking creatively about funding and resources. Students embrace these challenges with good will, humility, and realism - but aren't deterred in the face of a world that tries to tell them that "they can't" because they're small, or tries to convince them that their school isn't as good as larger institutions.
Our young people are talented and insightful. Without them, our classes would be traditional and bland: boring.
My Project
Students need these ten Texas Instruments TI-36X Pro Engineering/Scientific Calculators for our Chemistry of Cooking class and AP Biology. Because each of these classes involves advanced calculations and long chains of numbers, it's key that students are able to visualize their measurements while keeping track of long computational values and significant figures.
In AP Biology, these basic scientific calculators will help students learn about statistics, population growth, and biomass calculations.
In Chemistry, students will used these calculators to practice stoichiometry and measurement of cooking ingredients while also keeping track of complicated masses and large exponential values.
Right now, we have NO calculators - and many students simply cannot afford to purchase their own.
These calculators will permanently stay with our classroom and allow deeper learning without added financial stress for our students. Additionally, with this added resource, I can now go even deeper in depth with the concepts we've just begun to explore. More statistics, more measurement, more science.
