I teach a fabulous group of first graders who are inspiring, motivating, and fun to teach. They are the future readers, writers, mathematicians, computer analysts, engineers, artists, and musicians of the world.
I teach in a large, diverse, K-8 high poverty school in an urban area of a large city in Pennsylvania that experiences crime.
Our school receives Title I funding and the entire school is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students who come to school eager to learn are from various living situations such as single parents, foster homes, homeless shelters, or extended family living. My students have a variety of learning abilities and disabilities including Special Education, ADD, ADHD, vision impairment and English as a Second Language. I am dedicated to meeting their needs daily, along with building their self-esteem and confidence.
My Project

Can you imagine seeing what the teacher is talking about?
Can you imagine hearing them? My hope is that this requested technology will help further develop a love of reading, speaking, math and science. We have very limited technology in our classroom. We were recently blessed with a projector and Chromebook from another DonorsChoose.org project. This project is the next part. A document camera can project students' work right onto the wall. Can you imagine how exciting it will be to see their own work on the wall and their classmates offer constructive feedback? It will take our learning to a whole new level. I can write words or math problems onto paper or a small whiteboard and project it for the whole class to see. Or even better, a student can become the teacher and do it! I will be able to project text, read it to them and they can follow along with the textbook or reading book on a large wall. You see, we don't have class sets of everything that we read. Not every child has a book to look at. But having this technology, it will enable so many more options.
We need a document camera to see what we are learning in math. It's sometimes hard to explain how to work a math problem without being able to show them on the wall. And even better, a student can show how they did it so their classmates can learn from them. The printer ink will be used to create the children’s projects to enhance their learning and self confidence.
