My students need books to read at home with. It is difficult to promote literacy to low-income students, because they do not have the means to afford interesting reading material.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with students that struggle with grade level reading, reading comprehension and higher order thinking skills. Most of my students are multilingual and have varying cultural backgrounds. More than 70% of my students come from low-income households. My students range from 8-12 years-old. They are easily motivated. It seems that no matter the activity, I have willing and eager participants in the classroom.
My students are interesting, fun and inquiring individuals who love to learn.
I consider myself lucky; I work with the best students in the world!
My Project
My students come from low-income families that cannot afford to buy new and interesting reading materials for their children. If I had an updated selection of high interest books, students would be more motivated to read the books at home. It is recommended that students read a book of interest every night for 20 minutes. But how can they do this without the proper resources? If I provide each student with a different book to borrow every week, I will get students to practice reading at home and even better help them to develop a life-long love of reading. As a reading specialist, nothing would make me happier.
