Operation Let's Get EVERYONE To Love Reading Has Commenced
My students need lower-level Accelerated Reader books so they can feel successful in reading. Many of my special education students cannot read on grade level, so I need leveled books to help them read and grow!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
How do I even begin to describe 64 special people? 64 people with unique personalities and an unflinching desire to do great things. My students are often left behind. We are located in the north part of Baton Rouge where the majority of their school years have been plagued with teacherless classrooms or with teachers who do not try. In addition, the students have endured terrible heartache through the flood that ravaged most of Baton Rouge in 2016. To offset the hardships that come at home, I want my students to enter my English classroom and learn that reading can be beautiful and rewarding!
My students are leaders, readers, innovators, and children who are going to change the world.
In North Baton Rouge, the students don't always get the same opportunities as children in schools nearby. They are amazing children. They want to learn and when they have an adult who believes in them, it is amazing what they can do. I have seen how they react to literature they like. They crave more and even ask if I can recommend more stories! These books will just help build that hunger for learning even more!
My Project
These lower level books for our classroom library will help my students feel successful in reading books that are on their grade level. It is common in education for many students to be behind grade level, so we should be providing as much opportunity for them to feel successful, if not provide more! Let's help all kids feel successful in reading! With lower-level books, I get all kids to read and not give up on it because the material is too big or hard to understand. With these books, while not on 8th grade level, it can help them grow in their current level so they can get closer to being on level with the rest of their peers!
At my school, we complete Accelerated Reader and these books will get ALL of my students to feel like successful readers who are growing all year and help them see that there is a place in reading for all levels!
Every single student in my class is required to read, but we are lacking in lower level books. This is disproportionately harming my special education students because they don't have as many choices in their reading as their peers do. Help me get leveled books for my students so that they can feel seen and valued in my classroom
