My students reside in a mostly rural area south of St Louis. They have common interests in agriculture and sports like most middle school kids but project-based learning has invested many of my students in their education more than any other subject. Basic items like an egg drop, atomic model and other common labs cause them to work harder than they had in years past. I want to capitalize on this momentum.
I've seen my students really embrace science and with our phenomenon based labs and this is visible in increased academic scores and reduced truancy.
Last year we implemented two new projects: catapult physics and radios. They both have been resounding successes. With our county struggling with poverty and terrible drugs like meth and heroin, keeping kids in school does more than just keep them safe, it also is reflected in a safer community.
The students have been eagerly anticipating the and the supplies provided by you. DonorsChoose.org is helping them stay involved and active in school.
My Project
This project is in conjunction with an existing grant through Samsung and our school district to increase understanding of states of matter through use of phenomenon based demonstrations and labs like liquid nitrogen which demands a dewar flask to be transported. Additionally, we are expanding our use of radio and radio direction finding to capitalize on success we had teaching waves and the EM spectrum with hand held radios, as well as HF and UHF/VHF transceivers. The Wide Mouth Cryogenic Container Liquid Nitrogen Ln2 Tank we are seeking will augment our existing station equipment facilitated through the ARRL and other generous agencies.
Students witness changing states dramatically with liquid nitrogen which must be transported in a dewar flask because of its great temperature.
