Help me give my students wobble stools, flex space comfy floor seating, and the Norwood laptop presentation station to create more space for their flexible seating options.
My students are third graders who have diverse abilities and needs. My students are identified as academically gifted, second language learners, autistic, learning disabilities as well as unlabeled students. They are all in my reading and writing class for half of their day. I departmentalize with another teacher who teaches them math and science. My students move around the room as needed during guided reading time.
Most of our students live in the surrounding neighborhood.
31% of our students in the entire population are on free and reduced lunch. We also have a large military population, since our school is located near an air force base. We currently have 505 students. Many ethnic backgrounds are represented.
My Project
Flexible seating allows my students to take control of their learning by choosing a seat that best helps them succeed. When my students come into my language arts classroom, they choose a seat and space where they want to learn for the week. This past school year, my students enjoyed using some flexible seating options thanks to DonorsChoose.org.
Not only does flexible seating create an engaging environment for students to learn and want to try their best, it also encourages students to connect with their classmates.
Since students have the chance to choose different seats regularly, this fosters an environment where students really get to know their classmates and help each other learn. After surveying my students this past year, I found it very meaningful as I read why they loved flexible seating so much and their suggestions to add more of their favorites to the classroom. My students input led me to create this project.
The items I selected will help create more space and allow for more comfortable seating options. The Norwood laptop cart presentation station allows me to create more space by putting my document camera, projector, and laptop all on one smaller cart. The additional Learniture wobble stools will allow more children to get their wiggles out during my ELA class. Lastly, the comfy floor seating will allow more kids to read comfortably around the room.
