I teach in an urban school on the south side of Indianapolis. Many of my students have learned first from the school of hard knocks, but this only makes them more spectacular.
My students are the most resilient and capable world-changers I know.
Their passion is inspiring, their innovation humbling, and their joy contagious. At Christmas time, I had a student whose family couldn't afford gifts. When his friends learned of this, they organized a fundraiser for the family and we all picked out gifts together on a voluntary after-school field trip. This is just one instance of their incredible resourceful generosity. And even on the hard days, these kids find a way to laugh.
We are going to make this world a better place, one dance-party at a time!
The holiday season is about more than just consumption. In the world of Fortnite and 2K19, it is becoming increasingly important to directly teach altruism in schools, especially schools in high-risk communities.
This season I hope to give my students the opportunity to turn their old shoe boxes into boxes for Operation Christmas Child: an organization that sends Christmas gifts to children all over the world.
When you fund this project, you are purchasing the gifts with which to fill the boxes. My students will then spend an afternoon packing the boxes to be sent off and writing letters to go with them.
Teaching kindness is important, and what better way to do so than an experience like this.
