My Students

We are scholars, creators, and leaders. In our school, we strive to disrupt the narrative that race, economic status, and nationality should dictate whether or not a child can receive a quality education.

We are a Title I school in Washington, DC, our nation's Capital, where 100% of our students receive free breakfast, lunch, and late afternoon supper.

Despite the setbacks that our students may face, we ensure that our students attaining an excellent education provided by quality educators. Our students might not come to school with all the materials they need for a number of reasons, but we strive to use our resources to provide the highest-quality education despite economic and social barriers.

My Project

I love having a diversity of math activities during our station rotations in class. As a teacher that strives to teach the whole child, I have a desire to incorporate many types of learning within math: experiential, project-based, and now, literary. I am super excited about Truesdell's initiative in promoting the love of literature to our students, and I want to bring this love into my math classroom.

My students have grown a love for reading, and I hope to bring math literature into the classroom to engage my students in a different way of learning math and excite them with something they already love!

I am requesting books that cover topics such as measurement, time, and money, as well as general arithmetic. These topics typically go uncovered or rushed through in many curricula because of the pace at which the students need. By bringing these books into their "Exploration Station," they are able to gain the much-needed exposure in an educational yet interesting format. I also would like to have the children build their sense of accountability and have a designated bins for space for them to store their math library.

Learning math from stories provides the children with insight on how to apply math to their daily lives. The books I have selected are in full alignment with the 2nd Grade curriculum we use at Truesdell. My hope is for the children to use the books to learn and practice vocabulary, at their own pace, to assist in learning on their own. I cannot wait for the day I can see them sharing the joy of learning about math by choosing to read a book independently or share with a partner. I hope you can take a step towards reaching my vision.
