At our school, every student is greeted by name and has a personal relationship with more than one adult. Academic success comes from a calm environment with cool colors and caring educators. Within the brick walls, students can make mistakes and grow as digital learners. Their rigorous academics in the core math, reading, science and social studies classes keep the scholars on or above pace with the Minnesota State Standards. These students come to school with great potential, and are predicted to be the world's greatest changemakers.
These brilliant minds will work in jobs that have not yet been created.
It is therefore important that they have exposure to the same level of brilliance shown in their successes, in their classroom instruction and materials. Students who have access to supplies can communicate, advocate, and persuade their peers. These warriors will transform the world, and make it a place that we can never imagine.
My Project
In the classroom, with more than 25 students, desks are packed together, with limited free space. 5th graders are growing rapidly both physically and emotionally, where they not only need additional space but more freedom. New storage stools would help the students organize their supplies, escape the distractions of large groups, and provide comfort in a very difficult subject.
Historically, math classes have been rigid, uncomfortable, and embarrassing for many fifth grade students.
It is humiliating if you answer a question incorrectly, or do not understand a concept. Having stools in the classroom provides flexibility and comfort, in a difficult subject. When students feel comfortable, where they can settle in with a comfortable chair, and watch the class lesson from a different angle, they are more successful. Academic proficiency is dramatically impacted by student comfort and stability in the classroom. If students feel cramped sitting in large groups with little room, it is harder for them to solve difficult math problems. Just as adults need to learn while standing, sitting, or from a digital platform, students need the same luxury. With new storage stools in the classroom, the 5th-grade kings and queens would truly feel like the royalty that they are.
