Our school is a small rural alternative school in Central Idaho. The economy has been struggling for years. This has made funding things difficult. In hard times we need to get creative to make it happen for our students.
Our classroom serves the most at risk students in the school district.
They were struggling with being in the traditional high school and came to us to get back on track. Many of the students struggle just to get their basic needs met and don't have the resources to bring needed supplies to school.
My Project
We have not had access to many books in our small rural school and the students become bored with the older books that we have on hand. Students need resources to practice their reading skills. The books that we present them need to be up to date and at levels that will promote increased learning.
Having books like Stone Fox, The Giver and The Maze Runner that students are interested in will encourage them to read for fun and during their free time.
They will begin to improve their reading abilities. This improvement will help them to be better prepared for their general core classes. Successful readers are successful in other areas as well.
