Our students live in a rural area in Pennsylvania. They work hard and are excited when learning. We strive to encourage literacy for life and provide our students with experiences that will enhance their understanding of the world. Our school has limited resources regarding current events and relevant nonfiction reading. Providing weekly nonfiction text and putting it in each student's hands would be so beneficial! It would also benefit them to be able to take home and share with their families what they have been learning about.
My Project
Scholastic news materials for my students each week will really enhance our English language arts curriculum.
First, it would provide students independent opportunities to read grade level appropriate informational text.
By providing picture support, many can explore these texts on their own. They can use decoding skills as well as context clues to learn more information.
These Scholastic News magazines would also provide an opportunity to read together as a class and develop more understanding of concepts. It would provide a rich resources for discussion and further research.
Finally, it would provide a resource for students to be able to explore the elements of nonfiction reading. By being able to cut apart headings, captions, photos, and other nonfiction text features, students could gain a deeper understanding of nonfiction reading.
Having this consumable resource with relevant information each week would be so beneficial to all of the students in my class by providing grade level non fiction text.
