Help me give my students books on diversity awareness and the importance of kindness, as well as teaching units to implement these life-changing lessons.
Every day, I am surrounded by the most amazing students! Even though they come from a variety of backgrounds, including race, religion, and family structure, we all work together to create a unique learning experience; we work hard at instilling a love of learning and exploring that will last a lifetime.
My students are truly exceptional!
They persevere when faced with a challenge, creatively inspire our community, and believe in one another. They are tomorrow's leaders and world-changers. They are our future, and together we can help them soar to their dreams.
My Project
Research on prejudice shows that when people come into contact with those who are different than them it reduces stereotypes. However, sometimes it isn't possible to expose my students to different cultures in person, but books can serve as an introduction to the world.
Children's books can act like mirrors into oneself while a window into the world.
By incorporating a variety of picture books into my English Language Arts curriculum, I am hoping to open many windows for my students which will, in turn, lead to understanding and acceptance.
To help me incorporate the standards for reading in my classroom, I am requesting four units from the Rooted in Reading series. Each of these units uses diverse picture books while helping students master comprehension, learn and implement reading strategies and skills, and increase writing skills.
The books I am requesting each focus on diversity awareness by opening windows for my students. From "Martin's Big Words" to "Looking at Lincoln" to "Salt in His Shoes" my students will not only see someone who looks and may have believed different from them, but they will also see how understanding, dreams, and perseverance can overcome all obstacles. "The Invisible Boy," "Each Kindness," "Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch," and "Those Shoes," will show my students a glimpse into empathy and the importance of kindness. Finally, "Akiak" and "When I Was Young in the Mountains" will open a window into understanding cultures and how why where we come from helps to shape us.
Through your generosity, we can open windows into the world while changing the hearts of the future.
