Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Being a teacher in a low income area, my students face a variety of difficulties. They rely on schools to be their home away from home with less distress. In our classroom, it's my goal to make things as interesting, meaningful, fun, exciting, successful and less complicated for them.
My students enter class with the spirit of wanting to know more than they did the year before.
They do not like the usual textbook learning, but more hands-on learning such as drawing, reading from real chapter books, interacting in group projects, making their own creations, and more. They love being given the ability to do things that challenge their minds. Having this kind of motivation in the class brings inspiration to the classroom environment. Students, no matter how much some show it and others don't, want to be successful on some level. They want to know that they can do anything by putting their mind to it. As a teacher, this is what I want as well and will work to any length to give them this opportunity of success.
My Project
Reading is more than words on paper, it is the adventure you get through its events and the people you get to know through the characters. It is wanting to go back and read it over again because everything about it made you more excited about reading! This is what I want for my students in the classroom, to be introduced to a chapter book that they will remember reading years from now!
I want them to know that reading makes your world BIG!
All year, my students have put forth so much effort in their reading to prepare not only for the next grade level, but for the future. What better way to end the school year than with a fun independent reading through the Tale of Despereaux, a story outside the usual textbook! Students don't often get to fully explore a chapter book with fun projects to go along with it throughout the year and this will be a great opportunity for them to do so. With this book, my students will not only go on an exciting adventure with the characters, but will also have the opportunity to compare and contrast the story elements to the movie version of the book! Both academic learning and fun altogether!
