My students come from a predominantly low socio-economic background. They walk in the first day of school without any supplies, but with a huge smile because they love coming to school! School for them is a place of refuge and safety.
My students have the biggest hearts and are quick to share what little they do have with their friends in class.
I am always amazed how positive they remain despite the struggles they face at home. My students do not usually have access to the internet at home, so all research for all projects must be done in school.
My Project
My students eagerly come to school with a desire to learn. Unfortunately, we have outdated textbooks for Science and Social Studies which makes it difficult for students to do any type of current research without going online for help. We will have nearly 200 5th graders this year and only access to 30 computers at a time. Having even a few Chromebooks could help immensely with research projects, and allow my students access to the latest information. Additionally, I have many students with learning needs that would benefit from doing their work on a Chromebook, as it is easier for them to type than write by hand. My ELL students need a lot of background information to comprehend and being able to use Chromebooks would be amazing!
