We have recently created an AP program for U.S. History. I would like to purchase 20 copies of Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States" for the students to read. The students enter this course with little experience reading historical sources besides their textbook. Having a set of Zinn's book would enable me to increase their exposure to different historical perspectives. I teach U.S. History (inclusion, regular, honors, and AP) and World History at a small rural high school. Most of the primary sources materials we use must be very short in length due to copyright limitations and financial limitations. This book would require the students to practice reading a longer historical work, which would be a great benefit for those students going on to college. 15 students are currently enrolled for this spring's AP course. The class set of books would benefit not only this spring's class, but future years of AP students as well. Therefore, the number of students participating and benefiting from this experience would continue to grow over time. One of the goals of the AP program is to have students examine issues from a variety of perspectives. The combination of traditional textbooks and limited library resources make this more difficult. This class set of Zinn's book would be an effective first step toward engaging the students in the complexities of history and historical perspective.
