Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students with severe language and learning disabilities learn in a different way compared to their general education peers. Most of the students have social and emotional disorders that affect the way they interact with others. My students like to be engaged in learning using resources that are not available to them. They love to use more than one sense in discovering the world around them.
As members of a low-income community, my students have a challenge accessing different modes of discovery.
Content needs to be both visual and interactive for them to be interested and engaged. Many have communication disorders that prohibit them from responding using traditional methods. It has been my mission as their teacher to make the world more accessible to them.
My Project
In special education, technology has become an important tool to help students with their needs in many ways. Content that was once very difficult to present to the students through texts and pictures on paper becomes alive with the use of a Chromebook. Technology enables students to be engaged in the content and respond to it in their own ways. Programs that are geared towards communication will be used on the Chromebooks in which students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the content in their own way. The Chromebooks can be used to access school subscriptions of Mobymax, Raz-Kids, and Prodigy.
The donations for this project will improve accessibility for students and classroom management as students will be stimulated appropriately by the lessons we are covering in class.
Also, Chromebooks will help bring the students together socially as they can engage in lessons and games that can be interacted with the use of response programs, such as Kahoot and Pear Deck. It will help reduce problematic behaviors as the Chromebooks will serve as a reinforcer for positive choices in the classroom.
