This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Over the past several years, the schools in our district have suffered from severe budget cuts, limiting the amount of resources our students have to learn. Each year, my colleagues and I work diligently to find new, creative ways for our students to grow. Our instructional focus this year is to increase rigor (especially with literacy) as we know that all students learn best when they are held to high expectations.

The students at our school are low-income inner city students who all receive a free lunch.

They are a mix of neighborhood kids and students who travel in by bus from other parts of the city. Our students have the unique opportunity to come together from different areas to learn from each other. To make their learning most meaningful, it is important to provide them with as many rigorous texts as possible for them to choose from. Building a classroom library that has a range of complex texts at different levels will help to spark interest in reading, as well as challenge each unique reader in my classroom.

My Project

A well stocked library is an essential part of every classroom. Providing students with a wide range of books that not only spark their interest in reading, but also challenge them academically allows for a tremendous amount of growth. The books listed in this project are of various lexile levels, allowing all of my third graders to find books that they find both engaging and a good fit. They will be able to spend time reading books both in class and at home, working on valuable reading comprehension skills and building a robust vocabulary. Most importantly, this classroom library will help students develop open minds.
